In 1903, the Wright Brothers developed the first powered controlled flight, ushering a third dimension for mankinds means of travelling. With in 10 years, planes were being considered for reconnaissance when war broke out a year later. After only 4 years of development, they flew higher and faster, being armed with machine guns and bombs. Cities were bombed for the first time and Great Britain who had 'Ruled the Seas' now had to defend against aerial attacks. Later, between the wars, cities in China, Spain as well as other towns and villages in many countries, were the target of bombing campaigns. Aircraft had come a long way in such a short time.
However, between the wars, people like Charles Lindberg (First Nonstop Solo Flight Across the Atlantic), Amelia Earhart (The First Female Aviator to Fly Solo Across the Atlantic Ocean), Bert Hinkler(first person to fly solo from England to Australia) not to mention the inventors and engineers who developed the planes for pilots to fly, promoted aircaft for passengers mail and cargo delived by air and made great strides in both safety and design. The 'Barn Stormers' of the 1930's made shows across the USA and Flying Boats travelled the world in days which used to take weeks or even months. People like William Boeing (Founder of Boeing Company, Aviator), whose aircraft still grace the skies. Then came World War 2 and an explosion of engineering and technological breakthoughs made aircraft go from biplanes to jets in less than 15 years. In 1969 we put a man on the moon, which led to sending probes to Mars and even sending probes to the edge of our Solar System, just some 66 years later from when the Wright Brothers flew near Kitty Hawk back in 1903.
Now, for over 100 years man has been reaching for the sky and with that effort, great strides were taken during wartime. From the First World War to Iraq, men and women from many nations have taken to the skies in aircraft made from canvas and strings to carbon fibre, using weapons from pistols and rifles to air to air missiles. This website is focused on the aircraft of World War 2 and the Korean War.
Back to TopThis website is a reference point for those of you who know nothing about World War 2 aircraft. It may be an old war to many of you and now it is history, but we should never forget the sacrifice millions of people made in that great conflict. The aircraft on this website constitute the best aircraft that the major powers had, like the British Spitfire and the Japanese Zero. While this website does not provide indepth information on each plane, it is a starting point, to give you a basic insight into aircraft that now are being flown on thousands of PC's around the world in combat flight simulations. For those of you who know nothing about the great aerial battles fought in the last century, this website will give you a single point of reference, to learn about the planes, pilots and aircrew who fought a WAR IN THE SKIES.
